Javier Milei, alone, discovers that there is opposition

The new concessions in the project, which are added to those made a week ago, show that it is not enough to remove Peronism. That not only fear can unite, as the Government hoped.

The announcement of Luis Caputo on the elimination of the fiscal chapter, withholdings and retirements of the omnibus project to move forward with the approval of the law exposes the political setback that the government suffered in recent days. The inflexibility of the governors, especially from the Together for Change league, to whom the Casa Rosada sensed closeness, the distrust of the dialogue blocs was added after the sloppiness surrounding the signing of the opinion, some of them with suspicions of illegality.

A little more than a month that seems like years for La Libertad Avanza, due to too premature wear. Meanwhile, other rumors plague the health of the cabinet, and Interior Minister Guillermo Francos appears in the eye of the storm. Francos is the one who generates the most confidence in the opposition, and who has the best ties with governors and unions. But he fails to penetrate the President’s inner circle. “He is firm, but others want his place,” they say in their surroundings.

The new concessions in the project, which are added to those from a week ago, show that it is not enough to remove Peronism. That not only fear can unite, as the Government hoped. The UCR and the provincialisms are no longer opponents of UP: they are oppositions to Milei, and they will have to demonstrate it. Libertarians, perhaps, are only now realizing it. The fight, strictly speaking, was won by the governors. Withholdings will not be processed. Before, they had managed to keep withholdings at zero regional economies, in addition to other changes: sugar law, biofuels and an additional etcetera. They managed to twist the arm of a Government that shows loneliness and traces of improvisation.

The doubts, now, will be what will happen with the President’s threats: Will you seek to melt the provinces with this cut in the project? Or is it a white flag waved towards the four cardinal points? The governors believe that Milei no longer has room. He dynamited public works and dried up discretionary transfers. What else could she cut out? They think. The co-participation is drawn automatically, and a restitution of Profits or co-participation of the tax on the check may be imposed by law. Milei must show signs to “the caste.” Generating trust in politics at times when the adjustment will begin to feel strong among ordinary people goes beyond an occasional tug-of-war. It will, perhaps, be a survival solution.
