Julen Lopetegui has issued a heartfelt statement thanking Real Madrid despite being sacked following a humiliating 5-1 defeat to Barcelona.

The Spanish giants have had a disastrous start to the season, winning only six matches in all competitions, and Sunday’s lacklustre performance at the Nou Camp was the final straw.
Lopetegui was officially dismissed and former Chelsea manager Antonio Conte is being lined up as a possible successor at the Bernabeu.

Madrid criticised Lopetegui’s record in their statement announcing his departure but the 52-year-old has responded with a classy message.

‘After the decision taken by the Real Madrid board of directors, I want to thank the club for the opportunity they gave me,’ Lopetegui said.

‘Thank you to the players for their effort and their work, as well as to each and every one of the club’s employees, for their good treatment during this time.

‘And, of course my gratitude to the fans for their backing. I send them my best wishes for the rest of the season.’
