The income limit to request subsidies for electricity and gas was raised

The considerable increase in the cost of the Total Basic Basket (CBT) in January, recently announced by the National Institute of Statistics and Censuses (INDEC), raised the income limit required to be able to request subsidies for public services.

During the first month of the year, a family needed $596,823.18 to avoid being below the poverty line, a notable increase compared to the $495,798 last December. Taking into account this increase and based on the basis that, according to current regulations, to request subsidies for electricity and gas, families cannot have income that exceeds 3.5 times the value of the CBT, the threshold established to apply automatically goes up.

In this way, the new income limit to access service subsidies was updated to $2,089,881.13, which implies that those families that receive income higher than said amount will not be able to count on the benefit.

With the update, it is expected that more families will be able to access the state subsidy, since the increase was 20.45% monthly, while income did not grow in the same proportion. The amount calculated to determine if the subsidy applies is the sum of all the monetary income that a household has.

Currently the rates correspond according to the group that has determined the segmentation system, launched in the last stretch of Sergio Massa’s management at the head of the Ministry of Economy. From there three groups emerge:

High-income segment (N1): includes households with total monthly income above the established threshold, owners of three or more vehicles less than five years old, three or more properties, or luxury goods. These users cannot access the benefit.

Middle income segment (N3): covers those households with total monthly income between $596,823.18 and $2,089,881.13, adjusting for particular conditions such as the presence of people with disabilities. Families that are within this group can apply for the subsidy.

Low-income segment (N2): this group includes households with net income less than $495,798.32, with adjustments for special conditions. These users can also apply for the subsidy.
